UPDATE: Tsunami warning issued after 7.7 magnitude earthquake strikes off B.C. coast

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake has shaken the north-central coast of British Columbia in the Haida Gwaii area.

The quake was felt across a wide area that includes Prince Rupert, Quesnel, and Houston.

The Geological Survey of Canada says a tsunami warning has been issued from the north tip of Vancouver Island to Alaska, but so far there have been no reports of damage.

The agency reports the quake struck just after eight o’clock local time, its epicentre 17 kilometres below ground about 200 kilometres south-southwest of Prince Rupert.

Several aftershocks have been reported, including one 5.8 magnitude tremor.
